trip itinerary

Visit three European countries and experience the majestic the the Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB) and the Matterhorn on this 14-day family hiking adventure! The TMB is perhaps the most iconic trekking circuit in Europe, normally taking hikers 11-12 days. Our trip starts with the “Best of the TMB", spread over 8 days, and concludes with three nights in Zermatt, Switzerland, home to the majestic Matterhorn, perhaps one of the most recognized peaks in the world!

The trip is packed with perks! We include lodging in 3-4 star hotels; all breakfasts; most dinners; luggage transport; private shuttle from Chamonix to Zermatt; milage-reducing cable cars, buses, and gondolas; emergency medical and evacuation insurance; and custom daily itineraries with maps. Visit the costs page to learn more about the inclusions.

Due to the high daily milage (8-11 miles/day) and significant elevation gain and loss each day, all participants must be in excellent physical condition with recent hiking experience. While everyone is welcome, this is a trip geared towards familes with teenage children over the age of 12.

When you and your family participate in this activity, all of you should be in proper condition for the challenges outlined in this prospectus and equipped with the appropriate gear as stated. You should always be aware of the risks involved and conduct yourself accordingly. You are ultimately responsible for your own safety. Prior to your acceptance as a participant in this trip, you will be asked to discuss your capabilities and experience with us. We may also request references to confirm your fitness level and suitability for participating in trip activities.

This trip is designed so that everyone may experience our adventure through shared participation in activities and tasks in an organized group environment. AMC travelers are known for their cooperative efforts, and expectations are that all participants will be considerate of others sharing this AMC Adventure Travel experience.

AMC Adventure Travel trips are run in a manner supportive of and consistent with the conservation, recreational and educational principles and mission of the Club. Trip leaders encourage participant conduct consistent with Leave No Trace environmental and conservation principles and local regulations.

While the itinerary below is what we have planned at the time of writing, various factors may require changes for reasons of safety, transportation or lodging availability, and unforeseeable circumstances (such as weather considerations, natural disasters in areas to be visited, or recommendations of governmental agencies). We reserve the right to make such changes as necessary, both before and during the trip.

Finally, it may happen on any trip that a trip member is or becomes unable to participate in one or more of the planned activities. Leaders in their sole judgment have the right and obligation to refuse participation in any activity to any group member for reasons of safety, whether it be of the group or of the individual. Illness, injury or lack of proper gear or fitness for a particular activity are examples of some conditions that might result in a participant’s being unable to perform one or more activity. Leaders may try to find a substitute activity for the trip member, but this may not always be possible.

Chamonix, France
July 21-22, 2024

The group will meet in Chamonix, France, the official starting location for most TMB trekkers. There are no formal activities the first day so you and your family can relax, enjoy the views and adjust to the time change and altitude. We will have our welcome dinner either the first or second night in Chamonix (TBD). Our second day we will meet to introduce ourselves formally and go over each day of the TMB. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy in this charming French city. You will arrive on your own with travel instructions from the closest airports, Geneva, Milan and Paris.

The Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB) is a long distance trekking trail passing through France, Switzerland and Italy. The complete circuit is approximately 107 miles (170 km) over 11 days, but we will be doing a slightly shorter circuit of 71 miles (114 km) over the course of 8 days, and 7 nights, with one full rest day in Courmayeur, Italy half way through. You can see a complete breakdown of each day with the locations, total distance, elevation gain/loss, and approximate hiking times for the average adult. There are also links to some of the possible lodging options and which meals are included. Please note that on some days there will be options to take buses/cable cars/gondolas to shave off some of the elevation gain/loss.

Chamonix to Zermatt
July 31-August 3, 2024

We will travel from Chamonix to Zermatt by private taxi. Zermatt is the end location for the famous (or infamous) Haute Route, the 137 mile trek from Chamonix. Zermatt is also home to the Matterhorn, one of the most iconic mountains in the world. Zermatt does not allow gas or hybrid cars to enter the city, so the taxi will take us to the edge of town and we will be picked up by the hotel's electric vehicles. We will spend three nights in Zermatt, and offer an optional day hike the middle day to either the Five Lakes or Gornergrat to Riffelalp. Both day hikes have amazing views of the Matterhorn. Our last night in Zermatt we will have a Bon Voyage goodbye dinner at a local restaurant. The trip will officially end in Zermatt on August 3.
